The calculator above solves one line of algebra: needed = (desired - current x (1 - examWeight)) / examWeight. Everything you earned before the final is already banked, so current x (1 - examWeight) is the number of percentage points you carry into exam day. Subtract that from your target and you have the gap the final has to close, then divide by the exam’s weight, because each point you earn on the final is worth only examWeight points in the course. Work a real case. You have 84% going in, the final is worth 30%, and you want to finish at 90%. Your banked points are 84 x 0.70 = 58.8. The gap to 90 is 31.2 points, and each exam point is worth 0.30 course points, so needed = 31.2 / 0.30 = 104%.
