Your semester grade is the number that leaves the gradebook and lands on your transcript. In many US high schools it is built from three pieces: your Quarter 1 percentage, your Quarter 2 percentage, and a final exam, weighted 40 percent, 40 percent and 20 percent. The calculator above takes those three numbers, applies whatever weights your school actually uses, and returns the semester percentage plus the letter grade on the standard 10-point scale. It also runs backwards. If you know the semester grade you need, an 85, a passing 60, whatever the situation is, enter it and the calculator solves for the score required on the component you have not taken yet. That is usually the more useful direction in November or April, when one quarter is locked and the final exam is the only thing left to move. Weights vary by district, so check your syllabus before trusting any default, including ours.

The 40/40/20 split is typical, not universal
The default in the calculator above is 40 percent Quarter 1, 40 percent Quarter 2 and 20 percent final exam, because that is the split you will find in more US high school handbooks than any other. It is a default, not a rule. Districts set their own weights and publish them. At least four other patterns are common. Some schools use 45/45/10, which halves the exam’s influence. Some use 50/50 with no cumulative final at all, or with the exam folded into the Quarter 2 gradebook as one large test. Fairfax County Public Schools caps a semester final exam at a maximum of 20 percent of the course grade, which is a ceiling rather than a fixed weight, so individual courses there can sit below it. Others average four quarters at 25 percent each across a full year and never compute a separate semester number. Find your real figure before you plan around it. It is normally printed in the syllabus you got in week one, in the student handbook, or in a district grading policy document. Once you have it, type it into the weight fields above. The three weights only need to total 100.
A worked example: 88, 82 and a 79 final
Take a student with 88 in Quarter 1, 82 in Quarter 2 and a 79 on the final exam, at 40/40/20. Quarter 1 contributes 0.40 × 88 = 35.2 points. Quarter 2 contributes 0.40 × 82 = 32.8. The final contributes 0.20 × 79 = 15.8. Added together that is 83.8 for the semester. On the standard 10-point scale it is a B, and on a plus/minus scale it rounds to 84, still inside the 83 to 86 B band. Two things are worth noticing. First, the 79 exam cost this student real ground. Their quarter average was 85, and the exam pulled the semester down to 83.8, because 0.20 × (79 − 85) = −1.2. Second, the same three numbers under 45/45/10 give 0.45 × 88 + 0.45 × 82 + 0.10 × 79 = 84.4, roughly half a point higher, purely because the weakest component carries less weight. Why the exam weight decides what can be rescued
The exam’s weight sets a hard ceiling on how far it can move you. The lift is exactly weight × (exam score − quarter average). At 20 percent, a perfect 100 against an 80 quarter average buys 0.20 × 20 = 4.0 points. At 10 percent, the same perfect exam buys 2.0 points. That is the whole story of exam leverage in one line. Now a real case. A student has 88 in Quarter 1 and 72 in Quarter 2, a rough second quarter, and wants an 83 semester grade. Under 40/40/20 the quarters have banked 0.40 × 88 + 0.40 × 72 = 64.0 points. Reaching 83 needs 19 points from a 20 percent exam, so 19 divided by 0.20 means a 95 on the final. Hard, but possible. Under 45/45/10 the same quarters bank 72.0 points. Reaching 83 needs 11 points from a 10 percent exam: 11 divided by 0.10 is 110. No such score exists. That student tops out at 82.0 even with a perfect final. Same grades, same target, and one version is arithmetically impossible. This is why finding your school’s actual exam weight matters more than any study plan you build on top of it.
Semester grades are the ones that reach your transcript
Quarter grades are progress reports. The semester grade is usually what gets recorded on the transcript and converted into quality points for GPA, which is why it is the number that compounds. On the standard unweighted 4.0 scale an A is worth 4.0 quality points, a B 3.0, a C 2.0, a D 1.0 and an F zero, with the common 10-point bands putting A at 90 to 100, B at 80 to 89, C at 70 to 79 and D at 60 to 69. A year-long course typically awards 0.5 credit per semester, so each semester grade is its own transcript line. The scale of the damage is smaller than it feels at midnight. A student taking seven courses over eight semesters ends up with 56 semester grades. Turning one of those from an A into a B costs 1.0 quality point out of 224 possible, about 0.018 of GPA. What actually moves a GPA is a correlated slide: all seven courses dropping a letter in the same semester costs 7 points and takes a 4.00 to 3.875. One caveat matters. This calculator estimates using the standard 10-point letter scale and an unweighted 4.0 conversion. Your registrar’s scale governs what is officially recorded, and honors weighting, plus/minus bands and rounding rules all differ by district.
Mid-quarter: unspent weight is the leverage you have
If the trend is bad and the quarter is not over, you still hold weight that has not been spent. Here is what that is worth. Say Quarter 1 finished at 88 and you are halfway through Quarter 2 sitting at 68, with the final exam at 20 percent. Quarter 1 has banked 35.2 points. If Quarter 2 ends at 68, you have 35.2 + 27.2 = 62.4, and an 80 semester grade needs (80 − 62.4) divided by 0.20 (the 20 percent exam weight written as a decimal), which is an 88 on the final. Now lift the second half of Quarter 2 to a 90. Quarter 2 finishes at 79, worth 31.6 points, for a running total of 66.8. The same 80 semester grade now needs (80 − 66.8) divided by 0.20, which is a 66 on the final. The required exam score fell 22 points. Wait until three quarters of the term is done and the same 90-level work only pulls Quarter 2 to 73.5, so you need a 77 on the final instead of a 66. The general form is: score needed = (target − points already earned) divided by remaining weight expressed as a decimal (a 20 percent exam is 0.20). In these three cases the denominator stayed at 0.20 — what changed is that more of Quarter 2 got locked in at 68, so the exam had to cover more ground. Every week you wait, more weight moves from ‘still winnable’ into ‘already earned’. Act while more of it is still winnable.
Block schedules, trimesters and other calendars
Not every school runs two quarters and a June final. On a 4x4 block schedule you take four courses per semester and finish each one in roughly 90 days. The two nine-week terms inside that semester behave like quarters, and the semester grade is the final course grade, so the whole credit lands on the transcript in January or June rather than being averaged with anything later. The 40/40/20 arithmetic still works. The stakes just arrive twice as fast. On an A/B alternating block, courses run all year and the ordinary quarter-plus-final structure applies unchanged. Trimester schools split the year into three terms of roughly 12 weeks, so there is no semester in the usual sense. If your three trimesters count equally, set the weights above to 33.3, 33.3 and 33.4, then enter the three term percentages and the tool averages them correctly. If your school uses two trimesters plus a cumulative exam, enter those weights instead. The rule underneath all of it is the same: every component gets a weight, the weights total 100, and each component contributes its percentage times its weight.
